Cars and Carnivores

The week may have been grey and “cold”, but just in time for the weekend we were back to the usual 30°C, blue skies and not a cloud in the sky!

My mission for Saturday was a trip to the local car dealerships to get myself a beautiful new accessory. Luckily Daan, a friend from work, his girlfriend Phoebe and Ewa had agreed to come and help me so that after a very nice breakfast we made our way to the Mecca of dealerships: A long dusty road in an industrial suburb of Pretoria with nothing but car dealerships on it. At the moment the economy is (surprisingly) not doing too well out here, so that it should not have been too difficult to find something, but this was not the case. In the burning sun we walked around for hours and at every dealership I was eternally grateful for my competent advisors since my ideal car only needs to have a nice shape and colour. I soon learnt that there were other minor things such as mileage, airbags and service history to look out for and this unfortunately meant that there was nothing out there for me! Another trip to this beautiful area will be due ... oh joy!
After such hard work it was obvious that we deserved a nice break: cider and a dip in the pool seemed appropriate and the dirty dusty road with all those ugly cars was soon forgotten!

After facing the metal beasts on Saturday, we all felt ready for the next challenge and decided to tackle the wild ones on Sunday. Well, this may be a bit misleading … we did not actually tackle any lions or kudus - and yet we got the reward.
There is a restaurant near Pretoria which serves an incredible variety of game meats: Zebra, kudu, giraffe, warthog and even rhinos are on the menu! For a true carnivore like me this place was heaven! A tree set course meal, starting with a soup, was followed by waiters coming round the tables and carving the game meat off skewers directly onto our plates. Whatever you want and as much as you can eat! Once you give up and admit defeat, you have to put up a white flag as a sign of surrender and face desert – yay! We spent three hours sitting in the beautifully decorated restaurant and munching away on exotic meats, delicious salads and delicious deserts. Unfortunately – some of you will be relieved – there was no giraffe on the menu that day so that we will definitely have to go back for more… life is tough!
