A dark State of the Nation

In a few hours South Africa’s President Jacob “Jay-Z” Zuma will deliver the annual State of the Nation Address. The speech typically focuses on the current political and socio-economic state, celebrates Government's achievements of the past year and presents a programme for the coming year.

While usually a little boring and predictable (Jay-Z is not known for being the most talented public speaker), this year the State of the Nation could turn out to be a rather memorable event. Not because of anything Jay-Z will say, but because of the environment he will say it in…

Since November 2014, Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned power provider has once again been making headlines for desperately trying but failing to keep the lights on. After a series of accidents at power stations and delays in maintenance and construction, Eskom has had to implement “Load Shedding” – planned periods of blackouts across the entire country. During the worst time, the power went out every day for anything between two and ten hours leaving South Africans to become masters in preparing cold meals and allowing them to enjoy them in candle-light.

Yesterday, Eskom announced once again that Load Shedding would take place this week – and that it could not guarantee that there would be power during the State of the Nation Address.

As Parliament does not have a generator, there is a chance that the Honourable President Zuma may have to present the achievements of Government to Parliament in a state of darkness. While this would without a doubt put even more people to sleep during the speech, it may finally wake up South Africa’s politicians…
