While writing the post about the Traffic Light Teacher, I came across an article written by undercover journalists, who had spent a few days begging in the streets of Johannesburg.
While some findings were quite encouraging…
“Working” eight hours a day, a beggar can “earn” R300 – R500 a day
… some a bit scary…
“This is my f***ing robot. Me and my boyfriend will kill you if you come here”
… others just made me sad:
“The passing cars were more sympathetic to my need for drinking money than his attempt to make a living. In about 20 minutes, I and my “bridesmaids” raised R182 – my colleague who was begging for food made R10.”
