After driving down a hilly part of the highway, the view into the valley revealed the reason for the traffic jam:
A helicopter had landed on the other side of the road and paramedics were busy carrying victims of an accident onto the plane. As I drove past, the helicopter was just about to take off leaving several severely damaged cars behind.
A lot of people had climbed onto the roofs of their cars and many had left their cars completely and walked to the scene of the accident.
As traffic started to flow again, no one was watching where they were going but couldn’t help but stare at the scene.
The normally so busy motorway for once was rather quiet.
The next day, I saw this heading in the newspaper
“Mother and Baby Killed in N1 Crash”
According to the article a mother and her six-month-old baby died and two people were severely injured when three cars and a truck collided. The passengers of a VW Polo were flung out of the car after it had collided with another vehicle, rolled over the highway and landed on the side of it. The mother passed away on the scene, her baby in hospital. The four year old daughter suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Half a family wiped out before breakfast.
Fortunately, I was just passing by.
